Poolside Paradises

While remote jungles and wild beaches are always part of the True Tribe wanderlust, sometimes scoping out a pool paradise is the only way to whet your appetite in the big city or desert dryness. We’ve rounded up our favourite and lesser known poolside retreats so you can still make use of your Fast Eddie or Wild Steve shorts even if you’re nowhere near the waves.

Ma’in Springs, Jordan

Set in the hills overlooking the picture-perfect Dead Sea resorts, Ma’in is a natural thermal springs in the least likely of places. Jordan may be surrounded by conflict but you can be sure to find a warm welcome wherever you go. If an exclusive, zen-like retreat sounds like your kind of paradise - welcome to the Ma’in Hot Springs Hotel and Spa. Musk burns gently through the hallways and the dark wood interiors create the feeling of a gentlemen’s club inhabited solely by monks. Once you’ve checked in to one of the upper floor rooms overlooking the desert valley, book into the Cascades Spa for a treatment and use of their pristine cliff side pool. Making use of a natural hot waterfall cascading into the slim pool, sit underneath and feel all the tension drain from your muscles as the warm water literally pummels out your knots. The understated daybeds all have canopies to protect you from the harsh Jordanian sun while tea and cold water infused with fruits are always on hand for a refresh.

Sanctuary on Camelback, Arizona

Arizona is synonymous with red rocks, so it would be remiss to spend time by any pool that doesn’t have a less than stellar view of them. The Sanctuary on Camelback in Paradise Valley is an oasis in the beautiful sun-dripped desert that deserves your full attention. Sip a prickly pear margarita underneath the swaying palms and cool off in the clear-blue infinity pool whenever the heat gets a little too much. Take advantage of those long, drawn out Arizona sunsets by taking an evening dip all to yourself after a full day hiking the scenic landscapes or simply making full use of the spa, tennis courts and fitness facilities.

Viceroy, Santa Monica

Whether for business or pleasure, Los Angeles is a city that never fails to impress. Take time out of your busy schedule with a stay at the impressive Viceroy in laid back Santa Monica and spend some time lounging by their smart European-meets-the-Hamptons pool area. Plush armchairs mingle with modern corner seating for a unique feel not too far from the ocean. The roman steps into one of their two dipping pools let you easily move from sun to shade, while the delicious poolside menu gives you yet another reason to stay away from the busy hustle and bustle of the city outside.

Amangani, Wyoming

Let’s face it, with its remote, Jackson’s Hole location, the Amangani is the ultimate destination spa retreat. Much like an exclusive club, the silence offers an unparalleled luxury seldom found elsewhere. Snow-capped peaks loom close by and despite the chill in the air, the outdoor pools remain the perfect warm temperature. Soak up the views in the open air jacuzzi after horseback riding through the mountainous terrain or indulge in a private Pilates class followed by a famous Amangani Himalayan salt scrub treatment. No matter how much energy you feel like expending on your retreat, there’s no doubt that this pool was made for a glass of red wine and someone to share the rugged views with.

Kamandula, Bali

Nestled in the lush, green Ubud jungle, the Kamandula is a luxury hunter’s dream. Not only is Bali a laid-back paradise, but the relaxed vibes at the Kamandalu resort will have you choosing poolside lounging over exploring the island proper. Treat yourself to one of the indulgent suites with a pool deck overhanging the trees below and feel like Tarzan (or Jane) in your own private slice of treetop living. With design this good, all that’s left to do is move from thatched hut to crystal water, taking in the world-class Balinese food and soaking in the meditative atmosphere. Add a yoga retreat or hiking adventure to your pool stay if the mood takes you, or simply revel in the island magic from a deck chair.
