Island to Island
You never change clothes. That is the whole sport.
In 2002, four Swedes had a late night in the bar of the Utö Värdshus, at the southern edge of the Stockholm archipelago. One of them owned the hotel. On the table were napkins printed with a map of the islands. The bet: last team of two to reach Sandhamn, some seventy kilometers of islands and open water to the north, pays for the hotel, the dinner, and the drinks. Two teams set out the next morning. The only rule was that they had to pass three restaurants along the way, where the last team to arrive drank whatever the leaders had ordered for them.
It took more than twenty-six hours. They arrived too tired to celebrate. They are remembered, correctly, as the Original 4.
In 2006, two veteran adventure racers, Michael Lemmel and Mats Skott, turned the bet into a race and named it ÖTILLÖ, Swedish for island to island. They ran it backwards, Sandhamn to Utö. In the early years eleven teams started. Two finished inside the time limit.
The sport had no name until 2011, when a podium finisher supplied one. Erika Rosenbaum called it swimrun. By then it had been happening for nine years.
Today there are hundreds of races on several continents and tens of thousands of athletes. Every first Monday of September the world championship still crosses the archipelago, twenty-four islands, roughly sixty kilometers of trail and ten of open water. What took the Original 4 more than twenty-six hours takes the winners about seven.
There are no transitions. You swim in your shoes and you run in whatever you swam in, dozens of times in a single race, land to water and back until the two stop being separate places. No other sport is built on that premise. Most pairs run a three-meter cord between them, and the mandatory kit includes a pressure bandage, packed waterproof, because the islands are a long way from a road.
In October 2025, World Triathlon voted swimrun in as an official discipline. Twenty-three years from a napkin to a governing body.
You do not need Sweden to try it. Any coast with two beaches and a trail between them is a course. Go with a partner. That is the format and the point. Keep the swims short at first, and learn the strange joy of running wet and swimming shod. The sport was invented by people trying to get out of a bar tab. It became the purest expression we know of moving between land and water.
